From as early as my teenage years, real estate and home improvement have been on my radar. To this day, Monopoly remains one of my favorite board games, as seen in my hefty collection of Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and The Gold Limited editions. Stopping at nothing to become a Monopoly mogul, I envisioned a more realistic version of this title on my resume.
Of course, my passion for real estate extends beyond the living room coffee table. My grandfather, Pat Daugherty, (Smithsonian Article) with the full support of his wife, started laying the necessary groundwork in 1952 by purchasing what was, at the time, considered swamp acres in Silver Spring, Maryland for a mere $100 downpayment. With time, he invested in Chincoteague, Virginia and as far as Exuma, Bahamas. My father followed in his footsteps, and over the years, I quietly observed his real estate successes in the DMV ((DC) District Columbia, Maryland, & Virginia) area, occasionally joining him on showings and getting a thrill from his investments, repairs, and transactional conversations.
This interest turned into action with the full and constant support of my mother, who, during the summers of my formative early teens, let me be the cleaning foreman on construction sites for a company in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Although the labor was intensive on those long, hot summer days, the understanding of the value and long-term outcome of hard work was worth it. Long after those summers were finished, my mother’s passion (read: obsession) for HGTV had us revamping, reinventing and renovating nearly everything in our three-bedroom house; where my sister demanded she watch less of the addictive channel, I encouraged her, looking for new projects to tackle. This is an enthusiasm we continue to share and pursue when we are able.
